The Story Behind Our Famous:
Betty Ballou's Cookies
As Told By: Mindy Fitzpatrick
"The one menu item I was sure of before we opened The Friendly Market was my Mom's cookie recipe. It was tried and true and with rave reviews for many years. Everyone loved them. I almost didn't get the recipe. Mom shared it with no one. As she got older and her Parkinson's got worse she could do the recipe up until the last three ingredients. Stirring in the chocolate, pecans and coconut had become too difficult for her. My mom had to have my Dad help with that, which probably cost her at least 6 or seven cookies as he was helping. When my Dad died she asked me to help and I refused until she gave me the entire recipe. She held out for a few weeks but her cookies were always in great demand and she finally gave in and told me the recipe. As it turned out she had to show me. It was cool to learn from my mom and I am glad I had the chance. She died in 1993 and her cookie was so well known to everyone we felt it was only appropriate to have her buried in her cookie tin after she was cremated. I am absolutely sure Betty would be very proud of her amazing cookie. We bake over 300 cookies in each batch now and most days we need two rounds of batter. My mom was a quiet and classy lady and would have never allowed us to name it after her. We did anyway and they are famous enough to where most people just ask for Betty's. I Love that she is part of our every day and so many still enjoy THE cookie."
Betty Ballou's Cookies are baked fresh every morning. Over 400 cookies to be exact and sometimes more. Here at The Friendly Market you will never find a day old bag of cookies!
